The members of PVA Keystone Chapter continue to be a large supporter of events going on in the area. A recent activity was the 26th Annual President’s Challenge conducted at the Boathouse Trail in North Park on Saturday, 19th September 2026.
This fun activity helped to raise funds to support the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in competitive sports. Currently, the Steelwheelers participate in 3 main sports: Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Basketball and Handcycling. The cost associated with the equipment needed to play these sports is a huge barrier to entry for many people, especially when their situation requires similar financial difficulties from a medical standpoint. Supporting the Steelwheelers gives these individuals the ability to participate in sports and build friendships with teammates that provide for a better overall quality of life.
The race was broken up into three starts: Wheelchairs, Recumbents, Walk/Run. The 5K Course started at the Boathouse, continued past the Tennis Courts, and then left onto Lakeshore Drive before turning at Kolich Grove parking. As always, these sporting events can be challenging, especially in Pittsburgh. While the course may seem short, the challenge of many long hills and numerous participants tests a rider’s skills. In addition, a turnaround midway point at the lower end of a steep hill may test your skills not only in riding but also in self-language control as well.
When finished, one can always look back and reminisce about the joys of involvement with friends and family, as well as enjoy replenishing one’s energy with a few snacks.
